SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's number of COVID-19 deaths eclipsed 100 on Tuesday, just over two months after the state reported its first death from the disease.
A total of 101 Utahns have now died from the disease, with three new deaths reported Tuesday, according to the Utah Department of Health.
The three people who died were all between the ages of 60 and 85, the health department reports. Two were men from Salt Lake County who were hospitalized at the time of their deaths. The third was a woman from San Juan County who was also hospitalized when she died.
The number of total COVID-19 cases in Utah increased by 99 from Monday, according to the health department.
The COVID-19 mortality rate is about 1.2% in Utah, according to the health department. The average age of those who died is 73.9, and about 74% of the people who died were 65 or older.
Just over 94% of people who have died from the disease in Utah were considered "high risk" for COVID-19, according to the health department. About 80% had at least one pre-existing medical condition when they were diagnosed with the disease.
Tuesday’s totals give Utah 8,620 total confirmed cases, with 696 total hospitalizations and 101 total deaths from the disease. Previously, there were 8,521 cases in the state.
The new numbers indicate a 1.2% increase in positive cases since Monday. Of the 198,592 total tests conducted in Utah so far, 4.3% were positive for COVID-19.
The total number of cases reported by the health department includes all cases of COVID-19 since Utah’s outbreak began, including those who are infected now, those who have recovered from the disease and those who have died.
There are now 5,346 people who have recovered from COVID-19 in Utah, the health department estimates. Anyone who was diagnosed with the disease three or more weeks ago and has not died is considered to be recovered from the disease.
The department estimates there are 3,173 active COVID-19 cases in Utah currently.
Four more people were hospitalized with COVID-19 in Utah since Monday, health department officials report. A total of 98 people are currently hospitalized with the disease in Utah.
There is no COVID-19 news conference planned for Tuesday. Utah officials have now transitioned to holding news conferences once a week on Wednesdays.
