VIDEO GAMELAND — Has your internet ever gone out and you’re left playing Google Chrome’s dinosaur run game? It’s addicting. I’m not telling you to turn off your Wi-Fi to play it, but if your router goes out, you have a great excuse for a new high score.

But why rely on electronics to play? James Collins and Angel Mey decided to create their own video game, no technology required.

The retro music in the background, title cards, charming sound effects and distinctive stop-motion combine to create a distinctly digital feel.

All that without mention of the fun obstacles that come across the “game avatar’s” way. Is that a pineapple I see? A laundry basket? A roll of coveted toilet paper? She shreds across a guitar case on her skateboard and does a flip on a ramp, for heaven’s sake, and it’s cool!

Of course, all good things must come to an end, and all video games must have obligatory sad death soundtracks. Notice the hip, abbreviated spelling, “ded” as the game avatar sputters out of existence.

With a lot of time on our hands and not a lot of space, it’s comforting to see that a room and its everyday items can be transformed into another dimension full of creativity. The idea of having three lives and leveling up with a high score sounds pretty good right now, too.

Whether it be converting your apartment into a game world or playing dinosaur run at your computer, game on!
