A CASE OF THE GIGGLES — Falling is funny; that is, when you're not the one falling — most of the time, anyway.

A wounded ego often takes a longer to heal than four broken bones, which is what Whitne Strain of Idaho experienced three summers ago while attempting to go over a ramp while mountain biking.

The moment that was captured on video shows Strain getting to the ramp and then tipping over into some nearby foliage. That fall caused several broken bones in her hand. She later shared that moment with her mother and sister-in-law, who reacted with an uncontrollable stream of giggles that were also captured in a moment to be shared.

Watching other people laugh at another person's misfortune is only funny when the subject is able to laugh at themselves, in my opinion at least. As seems to be the case, Strain was far enough removed from the pain to share it with nearly 1 million viewers on Instagram.

I exchanged messages with Strain, who said that during her ramp-riding attempt, she "SOOOO did not understand the physics of what (she) needed to do to accomplish (it)."

"It's why I was going so slow," she added. "I didn't know that I had broken (my hand) until we got home. ... I hope people enjoy the giggle. It's nice to be able to make people laugh, even if it's at my own expense."

As one who has gotten to the point in my life where I look for a round of applause each time I fall flat on my face, I will just say that it sure feels good to laugh when my old self would have felt like hiding.
