OGDEN — Two people were arrested following a police chase after officers fired shots at the fleeing vehicle that they say nearly hit them.

The incident began when Layton police dispatchers told officers to be on the lookout for a stolen Toyota 4-Runner with a California license plate near 650 N. Main in Clearfield and last seen getting onto I-15, according to Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Nick Street.

Troopers spotted the SUV and followed it onto Riverdale Road near 700 West. A trooper then activated his red and blue overhead lights about 10:10 p.m., prompting the suspect vehicle to flee, Street said. Troopers did not pursue but forwarded information to Weber County dispatchers.

About 10:20 p.m., Ogden police received information that the vehicle had pulled into an alley near 800 Kershaw Street. As Ogden officers walked up to the vehicle, the suspects attempted to flee and accelerated their vehicle toward the officers, according to a statement from Ogden police.

“One of the officers fired multiple times, striking the vehicle,” the statement said.

That officer was taken to a local hospital to be treated for minor undisclosed injuries.

The suspects crashed moments later and ran from their car, but were rounded up a short time later, police say. Two were taken into custody.
