SOUTH JORDAN — One man was killed on Friday in a motorcycle crash that closed southbound Bangerter Highway for hours, South Jordan police said.
The crash occurred at 3:51 p.m. and killed 56-year-old Richard Gomez, of West Jordan.
Gomez was southbound on the highway in the left lane when he approached a stoplight at 10400 South, locked his brakes, swerved left and lost control of the bike.
He was thrown off the motorcycle and wasn’t wearing a helmet, South Jordan police Sgt. Samuel Winkler said in a news release.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash and police are investigating if speed was a factor.
Winkler said warmer weather is bringing more outside and noted that many motorists still drive distracted.
“We implore motorcycle riders to please use a helmet,” Winkler said. “The use of a helmet may have saved Mr. Gomez today.”
The highway was closed at 9800 South but had reopened by 7:50 p.m.
