Sandy man sent to prison for illegal relationship now faces child pornography charges

SANDY — A man sentenced to the Utah State Prison last year for having an illegal sexual relationship with a 17-year-old now faces new charges.

In January 2019, Rick Tyler Harvey, of Sandy, was convicted in 3rd District Court of unlawful sexual conduct with a 17-year-old and endangerment of a child.

According to charging documents, Harvey, who was 27 at the time and using methamphetamine daily, engaged in a sexual relationship with a girl he met on Facebook, according to charging documents. Several times Harvey also injected the girl with meth and prepared cocaine for her to snort, the charges state. When he was arrested, Harvey told police he was “just looking out” for the girl when injecting her with meth because he was “concerned” about her using it on her own, according to charging documents.

In March 2019, Harvey was sentenced to up to five years in the Utah State Prison on both counts he was convicted of, with the two sentences to run consecutively, court records state.

On Friday, Harvey, now 29, was charged in 3rd District Court with four counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony. Images of child pornography were seized off of Harvey’s computer during the original investigation in 2018, the new charges state. A search warrant served on his electronic devices revealed child pornography with victims between 9 and 11 years old, the charges state.
