SALT LAKE CITY — On Thursday, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a time-lapse video showing the first three months of the Salt Lake Temple renovation project.
The temple closed on Dec. 28 and won't be reopened again until 2024.
In January, the construction began when The Temple Square South Visitors’ Center and parts of the south wall were demolished.
This month, crews have installed a crane on the south side of the temple to remove some of the stone on the temple spires that were displaced during the 5.7 magnitude earthquake in Magna on March 18. That earthquake also caused the angel Moroni statue's trumpet to fall.
In a news release earlier this month, the church announced that crews would remove additional stones from the east and west sides of the temple for preservation during the project, and also temporarily remove the angel Moroni statue.
The temple is one of Utah’s most frequented tourist attractions, drawing 3-5 million visitors each year.
