NOTOM, Wayne County — A Sanpete County teen died after crashing his motorcycle near a slot canyon in southern Utah over the weekend, officials said.

Wayne County Sheriff's authorities responded to a report of a crash near Burro Wash shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday. Witnesses told deputies that a person was riding the motorcycle on "rough terrain" when he hit a rock and was thrown off, Wayne County officials said.

The rider, a 17-year-old boy, was wearing a helmet but was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials did not immediately release the boy's name.

The crash happened near Capitol Reef National Park; county officials said National Park Service and Utah State Park rangers assisted deputies in responding.
