OREM — A couple who police say stole a bag of firearms was arrested following a short chase.
James Dekota Brunson, 23, of West Valley City, and Anika Celeste Thorpe, 21, of Orem, were each arrested for investigation of 12 counts of theft of a firearm and 12 counts of possession of a firearm by a restricted person.
Bruson and Thorpe were at a home in Orem near 750 West and 1300 North, “when a bag of firearms and ammunition were stolen. Two 20-gauge shotguns, three handguns, two .22 rifles, and a AR-15 assault rifle were stolen,” according to a police booking affidavit.
The couple left the house in a car reported stolen out of American Fork, the affidavit states.
Investigators were able to track the couple to West Jordan, where Thorpe was taken into custody without incident on Thursday. But Brunson ran, according to police.
“While running, James unveiled a handgun from his waistband and threw the firearm while fleeing. James was taken to the ground and taken into custody,” the affidavit states.
Brunson was also arrested for investigation of illegally carrying a concealed firearm, failing to stop at the command of police, theft and possession of drug paraphernalia, while Thorpe was also arrested for investigation of two counts of drug possession.
