STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Ayo Dosunmu scored 24 points and Illinois snapped a four-game losing streak with a 62-56 victory over No. 9 Penn State. Kofi Cockburn added 14 points for the Fighting Illini, who led most of the way and ended Penn State’s eight-game winning streak. The win also snapped Illinois’ six-game losing streak against Penn State. Lamar Stevens scored 13 points for the Nittany Lions.
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State is reportedly investigating allegations of NCAA violations made by a former football staffer in a lawsuit. Curtis Blackwell, a former Michigan State football employee, filed a lawsuit claiming his employment agreement was violated when he was disciplined while the school addressed sexual assault allegations against players in 2017. A recent filing in that case from Blackwell's lawyer suggested that deposition testimony by then-coach Mark Dantonio may have revealed NCAA violations. Dantonio announced his retirement earlier this month. Athletic director Bill Beekman said then that it was his understanding that the allegations were false. But an athletic department spokesman told The Detroit News on Tuesday that the school is looking into them.
MADISON, Wisc. (AP) — Aleem Ford scored a career-high 19 points and Wisconsin held off a late charge from Purdue to win 69-65. Wisconsin built a lead in the second half with strong shooting behind the 3-point arc. But it secured the win over Purdue by hitting all eight free throws it took over the final 28 seconds. A Ford 3 put the Badgers up 51-38 midway through the second half, and Noel Eastern’s foul on the next Purdue possession put Wisconsin into the bonus. Trevion Williams scored 17 and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Purdue.
UNDATED (AP) — The NCAA is moving toward allowing all Division I athletes to transfer one time without sitting out a season of competition. A plan to change the waiver process is expected to be presented to the Division I Council in April. If adopted, new criteria would go into effect for the 2020-21 academic year. Currently, football, men's and women's basketball, men's hockey and baseball players must sit out one season after transferring. The NCAA adjusted waiver criteria two years ago to give more athletes the chance to become immediately eligible, but that has led to complaints about inconsistency in the process. If the plan is adopted, any athlete in good academic standing and not facing a disciplinary suspension will be allowed to transfer and play immediately for the new school.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Jalen Smith had 22 points and a career-high 19 rebounds for his ninth consecutive double-double, and No. 7 Maryland extended its winning streak to nine games by defeating Northwestern 76-67. Smith achieved his 17th double-double of the season by halftime. Anthony Cowan Jr. scored 19 for the Terrapins, who never trailed in improving their record at home to 15-0. The victory, combined with Penn State's loss to Illinois, left first-place Maryland with a two-game lead in the Big Ten with five games to go. Ryan Young scored 17 and Boo Buie added 15 for the Wildcats in their 10th successive defeat.
