NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tyrese Maxey scored 25 points, and the 12th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats rallied from their biggest halftime deficit this season to beat Vanderbilt 78-64. With the win, Kentucky keeps a piece of the lead atop the Southeastern Conference standings with Auburn and LSU. The Wildcats also won their eighth straight over Vanderbilt, though this was the fifth time in this streak that they've had to rally from a double-digit deficit. This time, they trailed by as much as 14 in the first half and were down 36-27 at halftime before rallying to win coach John Calipari's 400th game at Kentucky.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Darius Days scored seven of his 20 points in the final five minutes as No. 25 LSU rallied to beat Missouri 82-78. LSU trailed by eight points midway through the second half before taking the lead for good at 72-69 on Days' 3-pointer with 4:43 remaining. With LSU leading 76-73, Days made a short shot following an offensive rebound with 25 seconds left. After Missouri again got within three points on Xavier Pinson's basket, Days made two free throws with 11 seconds left. Dru Smith led Missouri with 20 points. Reed Nikko matched his career high with 13 points.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Freshman Santiago Vescovi had 20 points and eight assists before fouling out to set career highs in both categories as the Volunteers trounced Arkansas 82-61. Arkansas (16-8, 4-7 SEC) lost its third consecutive game, shot a season-low 30.6% and fell by double figures for the first time all season. The Razorbacks had been one of only nine Division I teams to avoid any double-digit defeats. Arkansas played a third straight game without second-leading scorer Isaiah Joe. Tennessee (14-10, 6-5) played a fourth consecutive game without starting guard Josiah-Jordan James.
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Breein Tyree scored a career-high 40 points, 27 coming in the second half, and Mississippi defeated Mississippi State 83-58, extended its winning streak to three games. Tyree finished 13 of 22 from the field, 4 of 10 from 3-point range, 10 of 11 from the free-throw line and added five rebounds and four assists. Ole Miss outscored the Bulldogs 70-32 after the opening 13 minutes, 50-24 in the second half. Reggie Perry led Mississippi State with 22 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — The Auburn Tigers seem to have mastered the art of the comeback. Not to mention the knack of winning close games. The 11th-ranked Tigers have pulled off two straight overtime wins after facing big second-half deficits against Arkansas and No. 25 LSU. Now, they enter Wednesday night's game against rival Alabama on a six-game winning streak. Auburn has rallied for wins seven times from deficits of seven points or more. The Tigers have also gone 4-0 in overtime games and are 9-0 in games decided by six points or less.
WASHINGTON (AP) — NCAA President Mark Emmert is urging Congress to step in and put restrictions on college athletes' ability to earn money from endorsements. He told a Senate committee federal action is needed to “maintain uniform standards in college sports” amid player-friendly laws approved in California and under consideration in other states. The NCAA has said it will allow players to “benefit” from the use of their name, image and likeness and is working on guidelines. More than 25 states are considering legislation to guarantee those rights to players. Emmert says those laws could have a corrupting influence on recruiting.
UNDATED (AP) — Louisville and defending national champion Vanderbilt bring No. 1 rankings into the college baseball season. Each is listed atop three of the six major polls. Louisville made its deepest postseason run in 2019 and returns three top starting pitchers and most of its bullpen. Vanderbilt features two of the biggest names in the college game in Austin Martin and Kumar Rocker. Martin is poised to be the No. 1 overall pick in the Major League Baseball draft. Rocker threw a no-hitter in super regionals and was Most Outstanding Player of the College World Series. The season opens Friday.
UNDATED (AP) — The college baseball season begins in earnest this week. AP’s Eric Olson has come up with 10 players to watch. He says Alec Burleson of East Carolina could be the best two-way player in the country as the Pirates' starting right fielder and closer. He can also play first base. Other top players to keep an eye include: Pitcher Reid Detmers of Louisville, second baseman Nick Gonzales of New Mexico State, third baseman Austin Martin at Vanderbilt and outfielder Garrett Mitchell at UCLA
