SALT LAKE CITY — A man was shot and killed by police after he tried to enter a Latter-day Saint missionary center in Brazil Wednesday morning, according to an emailed statement from a spokesman for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The man entered the Missionary Training Center in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with a knife and was detained by security guards near the reception desk until police arrived.
"At some point, when the intruder attempted to attack police, he was shot and killed by police," Brazil area director of public affairs Nei Garcia said in the statement.
No missionaries or staff were injured, and a notice has been sent out to families of those in the building — including several from Utah.
"We are working closely with local authorities and are grateful for their efforts to respond and investigate. We will also provide missionaries and staff with any needed support. We are grateful for the prayers and support that have been offered at this time both for the missionaries and the family of the individual who was killed," Garcia's statement reads.
