SALT LAKE CITY — A man was arrested Sunday in connection with the Saturday shooting of a man who police say may not survive his injuries.
Esequiel David Torres, 18, was booked into Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of murder and two counts of aggravated robbery, according to a police affidavit.
Officers were first called about 2:15 p.m. Saturday on the report of shots fired, and found two people who reported that two men had tried to rob them at gunpoint, the affidavit says. The address of the alleged attempted robbery is not listed in the documents.
During that incident, one of the men fired three shots, according to the victims, who were able to give officers the license plate number of the men who tried to rob them, court documents state.
Fifty minutes later, police were called to the scene of another shooting and found a man with a gunshot wound to his head, along with one shell casing, according to the affidavit. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition and was not expected to survive as of Sunday, police wrote.

“Officers spoke with several witnesses who provided suspect and incident details. Officers later spoke with an involved party who identified (Torres) was the shooter and stated the shooting was in relation to complications from a drug deal. The information provided by the involved party matched the witness statements and evidence located at the scene,” police wrote in the affidavit.
Police asked that Torres be held without bail, as he was already on probation or parole while awaiting trial on a previous charge, according to court documents. Torres also “committed several violent felonies on the same day,” police wrote.
Because Torres had just turned 18 about three weeks ago, information about his previous charges was not immediately accessible.
