SALT LAKE CITY — A West Jordan man accused of stabbing his former friend has been charged with murder.
Spencer Greenway, 27, of West Jordan, was charged Thursday in 3rd District with the first-degree felony. Bail was set at $1 million.
On Jan. 21, Adam D. Cross, 27, was arguing with Greenway on the phone, according to charging documents. Later in the evening, Greenway showed up at Cross’ home, near 9300 South and 3900 West.
The two men began fighting in the street. At one point, Greenway hit Cross in the face with a baseball bat, the charges state. Cross then “suddenly broke away” from the fight and retreated to the house, according to charging documents. Greenway was seen waving a knife at that time, the charges state.
“(A woman) stated she witnessed the suspect holding a bat at one point, and hit the victim in the head. (She) stated the victim broke off from the fight and walked to the sidewalk and stated he was ‘bleeding out’ and needed to go. (She) stated the suspect was pointing at the victim with a knife and yelling at the victim about how he used to be his best friend and accused him of ‘(sleeping with) his girlfriend,’” according to a police affidavit.
The woman drove Cross to a local hospital where it was discovered he had a stab wound to his chest, according to the charges. He died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

A man arrested Tuesday in connection with a fatal stabbing in West Jordan used to be best friends with the victim, according to police.“Jordan Valley Hospital reported the victim sustained at least two stab wounds and had a collapsed lung. Jordan Valley was prepping to Life Flight the victim when he stopped breathing,” the affidavit states.
As West Jordan police investigated the case, they learned that Greenway had gotten into an argument with his girlfriend earlier that evening “over her friendship with Adam,” the charges state.
Suspecting that his girlfriend was cheating on him with Cross, Greenway told her he was going to Cross’ house to assault him, according to charging documents. When he returned later that night, Greenway told his girlfriend, “I stabbed Adam,” the charges state.
When interviewed by police, Greenway admitted to lunging toward Cross with a knife and “got him near the armpit,” the charges state. He told detectives he had planned on “sanitizing (the knife) in the dishwasher at his work,” according to charging documents.
Police also found several bats in Greenway’s home, including one “wrapped in barbed wire,” the charges state.
