SALT LAKE CITY — Two Chicago men had thousands of THC vape cartridges in their vehicle when they were pulled over late Wednesday near Cedar City, the Utah Highway Patrol reported.
William Joshua Diaz and Manuel Alejandro Guzman Mendez were arrested for investigation of drug distribution and drug possession.
A UHP trooper pulled them over on I-15 just before midnight for speeding and failing to signal during a lane chance, said UHP Sgt. Nick Street. The trooper could immediately smell marijuana in the car, he said.
“A search of the vehicle revealed 2,149 THC vape cartridges and nearly 4 pounds of THC shatter (a cannabis concentrate),” Street said.
Street said the bust is the latest in the UHP’s continuing efforts to intercept THC devices targeting mainly juveniles and young adults.
More than 40,000 THC vape devices were seized by UHP troopers and agents for the State Bureau of Investigations in 2019.
Street said in November and December that agents “uncovered THC vape device distribution efforts targeting Utah’s youth through social media apps. Those cases also turned up crimes involving unlawful firearms possession and sales.”
Street said that investigation was ongoing and specific details could not be released Thursday.
