WEST JORDAN — A man arrested Tuesday in connection with a fatal stabbing in West Jordan used to be best friends with the victim, according to police.

Spencer Greenway, 27, of West Jordan, became enraged, however, when he learned his girlfriend allegedly slept with 27-year-old Adam D. Cross, according to a police affidavit. Greenway confronted Cross early Tuesday morning and stabbed him, causing fatal injuries, police said.

Greenway was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of murder and obstruction of justice.

Early Tuesday, a woman identified in the affidavit as Cross’ girlfriend said she and Cross were driving around when Cross started arguing with someone on the phone.

“(She) stated Adam told the unknown individual to ‘come at me.’ (She) stated this conversation occurred approximately 30 minutes prior to the stabbing,” the affidavit states.

Sometime between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. Cross and his girlfriend arrived at her house, 9277 S. 3825 West. The girlfriend said she went inside for a moment, and when she came back out Cross was fighting with another man in the street.

At one point the two separated, but then resumed fighting again moments later, according to the affidavit.

“(The girlfriend) stated she witnessed the suspect holding a bat at one point, and hit the victim in the head. (She) stated the victim broke off from the fight and walked to the sidewalk and stated he was ‘bleeding out’ and needed to go. (She) stated the suspect was pointing at the victim with a knife and yelling at the victim about how he used to be his best friend and accused him of ‘(sleeping with) his girlfriend,’” the affidavit states.

Cross’ girlfriend drove him to Jordan Valley Medical Center where Cross collapsed while walking into the emergency room and hit his head, according to the affidavit.

“Jordan Valley Hospital reported the victim sustained at least two stab wounds and had a collapsed lung. Jordan Valley was prepping to Life Flight the victim when he stopped breathing,” according to the affidavit. Cross was pronounced dead at 7:14 a.m.

As West Jordan police gathered information about a possible suspect, they learned that Greenway and Cross were best friends growing up, and that Cross would always call a woman who was dating Greenway whenever Cross was in trouble, the affidavit states.

Police went to Greenway’s home to arrest him. After taking him into custody, Greenway admitted he got into a confrontation with Cross after he found out Cross was sleeping with his girlfriend, who is not the woman who drove Cross to the hospital, the affidavit states.

“Witnesses stated Spencer was in a rage. Spencer stated he went over to the victim’s residence armed with a knife and wooden bat-like object,” according to the affidavit. “Spencer stated he pulled out his knife and lunged at the victim but the victim did not back up.”
