NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Joe Burrow threw five touchdown passes, ran for another score and capped one of the greatest seasons in college football history by leading No. 1 LSU to a 42-25 victory against No. 3 Clemson Monday night to win the national championship. The small-town Ohio kid turned Louisiana legend delivered the Tigers their first national title since 2007 and fourth overall, breaking a few more records along the way. The five TD passes and 463 yards passing set records for a College Football Playoff title game as did his six total touchdowns.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Clemson had relied on its strong defense and quarterback Trevor Lawrence's skill to win all season long. Both let them down in the national championship game as LSU rolled to a 42-25 victory. Clemson gave up a season worst 628 yards and five touchdown passes to Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow and the Southeastern Conference champs. And when Clemson needed a response, Lawrence could not give them won. He finished just 18 of 37 for 234 yards and zero touchdowns. He was also sacked twice.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — LSU has finished No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the third time in school history, with Clemson No. 2 and Ohio State No. 3. The Tigers beat Clemson 42-25 in the national championship game Monday night and then received all 62 first-place votes from the media panel. LSU was No. 1 for the final eight weeks of the season and set a record by beating seven teams ranked in the top 10 at the time of the game. Georgia was fourth and Pac-12 champion Oregon was fifth. Florida was sixth and Oklahoma, which made the playoff, was seventh.

UNDATED (AP) — Even if they don't meet again on the field, Clemson's Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State's Justin Fields will be two of the stories that will define the 2020 college football season. The quarterbacks will compete for the Heisman Trophy and maybe to be the first overall NFL draft pick. Everyone will be watching to see whether LSU has turned its matchup with Alabama back into rivalry or was the Tigers' victory this season was a one-off led by a generational quarterback. And several coaches with lots to prove in 2020 will be sitting on various degrees of the hot seat.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina forward Brandon Robinson was injured in a car crash in which police say the other driver was charged with driving while impaired. The school says the injuries are not serious. It's the latest blow to the Tar Heels, who have spent the season dealing with injuries to a number of players. The arrest came after the Tar Heels lost 79-76 in overtime to Clemson. Robinson scored a career-high 27 points.

NEW YORK (AP) — South Carolina moved up three spots to No. 1 in The Associated Press women's college basketball poll after the top three teams from the previous week all lost. It was a rough week for ranked teams with 11 of them losing at least once. Nos. 1, 2 and 3 fell in a four-day span. Baylor moved up to second after beating former No. 1 UConn. The Huskies fell to fourth. Stanford and Louisville rounded out the first five. Arizona State entered the poll at No. 18 after knocking off Oregon and Oregon State. Iowa entered the rankings at No. 22 after beating Maryland and Indiana.

UNDATED (AP) — Baylor climbed to No. 2 in The Associated Press men's college basketball poll after resounding road wins over Texas Tech and Kansas last week. Gonzaga maintained the top spot after breezing to a pair of victories while Duke dropped to third and unbeaten Auburn rose to fourth. Butler rounded out the first five, followed by the Jayhawks and another unbeaten in San Diego State. Oregon, Florida State and Kentucky rounded out the top 10.

UNDATED (AP) — A prodigious statistical season led to a national championship for Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow. The LSU senior threw five touchdown passes against Clemson on Monday night and now owns the Football Bowl Subdivision season record of 60. Burrow went into the championship game on track to set the FBS season completion record. He just missed bettering Colt McCoy's 76.7-percent rate for Texas in 2008. Burrow finished at 76.2 percent. LSU finished first in total offense and Ohio State was the leader in total defense.
