ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Zavier Simpson scored 22 points, Jon Teske added 18 and Michigan's seniors made big shots late as the 19th-ranked Wolverines outlasted Purdue 84-78 in double overtime on Thursday. Freshman Franz Wagner had 15 points for Michigan, which avoided a third straight Big Ten loss. Purdue sophomore Trevion Williams had career highs with 36 points and 20 rebounds but missed a shot to win at the regulation buzzer. In the first overtime, Eric Hunter Jr. missed a contested jump shot for Purdue, and Simpson’s desperation 3-pointer on the run also missed for Michigan at the buzzer.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Cassius Winston scored 18 of his 27 points in the second half to lead No. 8 Michigan State to a 74-58 win over Minnesota. Xavier Tillman finished with 19 points, a career-high 16 rebounds and five blocks for Michigan State. The Spartans led by just four points at halftime before pulling away for their eighth straight win Thursday night. They stayed atop the Big Ten standings as the only team without a conference loss. The Golden Gophers were very competitive in the first half, which had five lead changes and five ties. Minnesota's Daniel Oturu had 22 points.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann is trying to avoid another January swoon by his young Buckeyes. For the second year in a row, the new year is bringing misery for Ohio State, which has shot poorly in losing three games in a row, including the first two of an arduous stretch of Big Ten contests. Last season the Buckeyes finished December 2018 at 12-1, only to lose the first five in a row and six of the first seven after the calendar flipped over to January. Kaleb Wesson has been a bright spot, averaging 14.7 points per game,

UNDATED (AP) — One of the best games in the Big Ten this weekend has Rutgers playing at Illinois on Saturday. Both teams were picked in the bottom half of the Big Ten in the preseason. Both are surprises. Rutgers (12-3, 3-1) has won six straight and is one game behind league-leading Michigan State. The Scarlet Knights are out to their best 15-game start since the 1975-76 team went undefeated in the regular season. Illinois (11-5, 3-2) is 1 1/2 games out of first place following its 71-70 win at Wisconsin on Wednesday.

UNDATED (AP) — Six bowl games this season saw their lowest attendance in history. Even though many bowls are played in half-empty stadiums, they aren't going away. The number of bowls will go from 39 this season to 42 next season. Average announced attendance for non-New Year's Six bowls was 34,500. Even though stadiums often don't fill, the games are attractive because they bring in valuable television viewers. The Football Bowl Association plans to form a task force to look at ways to grow attendance.

UNDATED (AP) — Some of the attendance problems that have hit college football during the regular season has shown up in the postseason. The Associated Press analyzed attendance numbers for 33 second- and third-tier Bowl Subdivision bowl games. AP found that 23 of those were played at venues where the announced attendance was less than 75% of capacity. Of those 23, eight were under 50%. Six bowl games had their smallest crowds on record. Those were the New Mexico, Cure, Camellia, Pinstripe, First Responder and Famous Idaho Potato bowls.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Ali Patberg scored 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting and No. 12 Indiana improved to 4-0 in the Big Ten Conference for the first time ever with a 66-48 win over Purdue. The Boilermakers scored the first four points of the game and then Indiana outscored them 14-2. The Hoosiers led 28-16 at halftime and took control by outscoring Purdue 11-1 to open the fourth quarter. Ae'Rianna Harris scored 15 points for the Boilermakers, who shot 56% in the second half after managing just 26% in the first half, when they went 0 for 8 from 3-point range.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Freshman Madison Greene scored a season-high 23 points and Ohio State beat No. 24 Michigan 78-69 in their lone regular-season meeting. Greene topped her previous best of 13 points by making 8 of 10 shots, including 2 of 3 3-pointers. Kierstan Bell added 15 points and Braxtin Miller scored 13 for Ohio State. Dorka Juhasz, the leading scorer for the Buckeyes, had nine points and six rebounds. Naz Hillmon had 24 points and 15 rebounds, and Kayla Robbins scored 17 for Michigan.
