JAZZ MUSICIAN, MERV GRIFFIN SIDEKICK JACK SHELDON DIES AT 88
LOS ANGELES (AP) — An acclaimed jazz trumpeter who was TV host Merv Griffin's longtime sidekick has died. Jack Sheldon died Friday. His manager said in a statement that the 88-year-old died of natural causes. Sheldon was a prominent part of the West Coast jazz movement in the 1950s alongside fellow artists Art Pepper and Stan Kenton. Sheldon’s tender horn solo on “The Shadow of Your Smile” helped earn it song of the year at the Grammys and best original song at the Oscars. Sheldon's distinctive voice was heard on “Schoolhouse Rock!” episodes including on “I’m Just a Bill.”

`CAPTAIN AMERICA' ACTRESS CHARGED WITH KILLING MOM IN KANSAS
OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — An actress who had a small role in the movie “Captain America: The First Avenger" is accused of fatally stabbing her mother inside a suburban Kansas City home. The Kansas City Star reports that 38-year-old Mollie Fitzgerald was arrested Tuesday by police in Olathe (oh-LAY’-thuh), Kansas. She's charged with second-degree murder in the death of 68-year-old Patricia “Tee” Fitzgerald. Authorities say she was found dead on Dec. 20 inside her Olathe home. A relative says Patricia Fitzgerald was in the process of moving back to the Kansas City area after living in the Houston area for several decades. Mollie Fitzgerald played Stark Girl in “Captain America.”
FLOATS, MARCHING BANDS HIT THE STREETS FOR 131ST ROSE PARADE
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Marching bands and floral floats moved through the streets under mostly sunny California skies as the 131st Rose Parade drew hundreds of thousands of spectators on New Year's Day. A flyover by a B-2 stealth bomber and a performance by singer Ally Brooke kicked off the annual extravaganza in Pasadena. It featured dozens of colorful floats decked out with countless flowers. The theme was "The Power of Hope." The grand marshals were actresses Rita Moreno and Gina Torres and Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez. Spectators started lining the route Tuesday, many of them camping on sidewalks and braving chilly overnight temperatures.
KISSES, CHEERS, FIREWORKS WELCOME 2020 IN TIMES SQUARE
NEW YORK (AP) — Couples kissed, others cheered and waved balloons as fireworks burst and confetti fell to welcome the start of 2020 in New York City's Times Square. In one of the globe's most-watched New Year's Eve spectacles, the crowd counted down the last seconds of 2019 as a luminescent crystal ball descended down a pole. Throngs of people cheered and sang along to the X Ambassadors' soul-stirring rendition of John Lennon's "Imagine" just before midnight. Confetti showered the sea of attendees, many of whom were also briefly rained on as they waited for performances by stars including rap-pop star Post Malone, K-pop group BTS, country singer Sam Hunt and singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette.
