Traction restrictions lifted in Little and Big Cottonwood Canyons

SALT LAKE CITY — Traction restrictions have been lifted in both Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon after being in place overnight, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.

No further delays are expected for those going up for a day on the slopes on Little Cottonwood Canyon Sunday, authorities say: The Utah Department of Transportation's Traffic site showed no delays for travelers in both directions of the canyon as of approximately 9 a.m.

The traction rule, which prohibits vehicles without snow tires or traction devices from driving in areas where it is in place, was put into effect on Saturday about 5:30 p.m. and remained in place overnight.

State Route 210 experienced slow downhill traffic Saturday due to poor weather conditions, despite a lack of accidents. Two plows worked the road, though UDOT reminded travelers that plows also get stuck in traffic, according to a tweet from UDOT Cottonwood Canyons.

There will be scattered snow showers throughout the state between Sunday and Monday mornings, with partly cloudy skies leading up to a new storm system New Years Day, according to the KSL Weather Center.
