SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A new satellite image of a factory where North Korea makes military equipment used to launch long-range missiles shows the construction of a new structure. The release of several new images from Planet Labs comes amid concern that North Korea could launch a rocket or missile as it seeks concessions in stalled nuclear negotiations with the United States. North Korea has warned that what “Christmas gift” it gives the U.S. depends on what action Washington takes. One new satellite image shows the March 16 Factory near Pyongyang where North Korea manufactures trucks used as mobile launchers for its long-range missiles.
BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian government forces are pressing ahead with a new military assault on the country's last rebel stronghold. The offensive has triggered a mass exodus of civilians fleeing to safer areas near the Turkish border in recent weeks. Under the cover of airstrikes and heavy shelling Monday, Syrian troops pushed deeper into the northwestern province of Idlib. The stronghold is dominated by al-Qaida-linked militants. It's also home to 3 million civilians and the U.N. has warned of the growing risk of a humanitarian catastrophe as residents flee the fighting. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called late Monday for an immediate halt to the hostilities.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A 33-year-old soldier from New Jersey has been identified as the American service member killed Monday during combat in Afghanistan. In a statement Monday night, the Pentagon identified the casualty as Sgt. 1st Class Michael J. Goble of Washington Township, New Jersey. Goble was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. The Pentagon says Goble's unit was engaged in combat operations in Kunduz Province, Afghanistan, when he suffered fatal injuries. The death raises to 20 the number of American troops killed in combat in Afghanistan this year.
NEW YORK (AP) — Boeing has ousted its CEO over the 737 Max crisis that has engulfed the vaunted American aircraft manufacturer. The company said Monday that Dennis Muilenburg will depart immediately and the board's current chairman, David Calhoun, will become CEO on Jan. 13. Boeing's Max has been grounded worldwide after two crashes — one off the coast of Indonesia in 2018, the other in Ethiopia last March — killed 346 people in all. Boeing is still struggling to get the grounded Max flying again, but Muilenburg could get $39 million in severance, stock and bonuses, according to a Boeing securities filing.
NEW YORK (AP) — A state judge has struck down a New York City rule supposed to take effect next year that would have limited how much time Uber, Lyft and other for-hire vehicles could spend without passengers in the busiest parts of town. State Supreme Court Judge Lyle Frank in his decision Monday called the city's rules “arbitrary and capricious.” They were announced in August. Uber had filed the lawsuit against the cap and says it is pleased by the decision. A spokeswoman for Mayor Bill de Blasio says the city will fight to keep the rule.
