NEWTON, Cache County — One man is in custody after a two-hour standoff with sheriff’s deputies, negotiators and a SWAT team in Cache County.
Deputies responded to a Newton home about 4 p.m. after receiving information that a woman there was being held against her will, according to a news release from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office. A 25-year-old white male had several firearms and had fired a handgun in the house “at least once,” the release says.
Officials set up command at a nearby church. Negotiators made contact with the victim, the sheriff’s office said, and she ultimately “was able to escape through a window and run to waiting officers.”
The man surrendered to SWAT operators without incident about 6 p.m. The sheriff’s office said he is detained and is currently being interviewed by detectives.
The incident is under investigation. The sheriff’s office did not release the man’s name Sunday.
