OGDEN — A memorial service open to the public will be held Saturday for legendary Utah jazz musician Joe McQueen.

The service, from 2 to 4 p.m. at The Monarch in Ogden, will feature a program from McQueen’s church, the Second Baptist Church of Ogden, and music from the Joe McQueen Quartet and “others that have played with Joe over the years,” according to a Facebook event for the service.

McQueen died Saturday, Dec. 7, at the age of 100.

His illustrious career included playing saxophone alongside jazz immortals like Duke Ellington, Ray Charles, Charlie Parker, Nat King Cole, Cab Calloway and Louis Armstrong. McQueen was born in Texas, raised in Oklahoma, and had lived in Utah since 1945.

McQueen learned to play the saxophone as a boy and continued playing his entire life, performing in a show just last month.

The Monarch is located at 455 25th Street in Ogden.
