TOKYO (AP) — Kyodo News service has reported historical documents show the Japanese Imperial Army asked the government to provide one sex slave for every 70 soldiers. The documents, gathered by the Japanese government between April 2017 and March 2019, include classified dispatches from the Japanese consulates in China to the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo, dating back to 1938. The documents appear to show a Japanese government role in the systematic forcing of women to serve as sex slaves for the Japanese military during the years leading up to and during World War II. They were known as “comfort women.”
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea says it has carried out a “very important test” at its long-range rocket launch site that will have a key effect on the country's strategic position. The Korean Central News Agency says the test was conducted at the North’s Sohae Satellite Launching Station on Saturday afternoon. It says the result of the test was reported to the Central Committee of the ruling Workers’ Party. The report didn't say what the test was about. The U.N. bans North Korea from launching satellites because it's seen as a test of long-range missile technology. U.S. and South Korean officials said earlier that the North had partially dismantled Saturday's launch site as part of denuclearization steps.
PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) — A US official says the Saudi student who fatally shot three people at Naval Air Station Pensacola had hosted a dinner party earlier in the week to watch videos of mass shootings. The official says a second Saudi student who attended the party recorded video outside the classroom building where the shooting was happening. The official also says 10 Saudi students are being held at the base and that several others are unaccounted for. The official spoke on condition of anonymity after being briefed by federal investigators. The FBI says the dead shooter was a 21-year-old member of the Royal Saudi Air Force.
ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota National Guard says the three soldiers who were killed when their helicopter crashed near St. Cloud this week were part of a unit that returned last May from a nine-month deployment to the Middle East. The Guard on Saturday identified the men killed in Thursday's crash as Chief Warrant Officers 2nd Class James A. Rogers Jr. and Charles P. Nord, and Sgt. Kort M. Plantenberg. They were killed when their Black Hawk crashed in a field about 15 miles southwest of St. Cloud, which is where they had taken off from. The Guard says the crash happened during a routine maintenance test flight.
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump says Israel has never had a better friend in the White House than him. On Saturday, Trump addressed an annual summit by the Israeli American Council in Hollywood, Florida. He recounted his record on issues of importance to Jews. But he also claimed that there are some Jewish people in America who don't love Israel enough. He says, “We have to get them to love Israel more.” Trump's comments were denounced by some as anti-Semitic and for trafficking in a stereotype that Jews are disloyal.
