SALT LAKE CITY — One person died in a crash on I-15 near 2100 South on Friday morning, authorities said.

A yellow Honda Fit that was entering a construction zone on southbound I-15 rear-ended a semitruck, according to a tweet from the Utah Highway Patrol. The agency first reported the crash about 12:30 a.m. Friday.

Traffic was slowing down due to the construction, but the Honda did not slow down and hit a semitruck at freeway speed, according to UHP Sgt. Jeff Washburn. He did not know why the car did not slow down.

The driver of the Honda was the only person in the car, Washburn said. They were wearing a seatbelt, but suffered fatal injuries, he added. The driver was not identified.

The driver of the semitruck was not injured, Washburn said.

Traffic was rerouted to eastbound I-80 while authorities investigated the crash, UHP said. By 7 a.m. Friday, there were no longer any traffic delays in the area, according to the Utah Department of Transportation website.
