NEW YORK (AP) — For the first time, Oregon is No. 1 in The Associated Press top 25 women's basketball poll. The Ducks, led by sensational guard Sabrina Ionescu, received 25 of the 28 first-place votes. No. 2 Baylor, the defending national champion, received the other three. Stanford, Maryland and UConn round out the top five. Tennessee's 42-year streak of appearing in the preseason Top 25 is over.
STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi State has lost four straight games by an average margin of 21.3 points and appears to be getting steadily worse in the second season of Joe Moorhead's coaching tenure. The Bulldogs head into the final month of the season needing to win three of their last four games to become eligible for a 10th straight bowl appearance.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has returned to practice on a limited basis, but tight end Miller Forristall could be out for the next six weeks. Coach Nick Saban says that Tagovailoa could be "a game time decision" with a sprained right ankle but he took snaps and went through some non-team drills in Wednesday's practice.
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn backup quarterback Joey Gatewood has decided to transfer. Tigers coach Gus Malzahn said Wednesday Gatewood opted to enter the NCAA's transfer portal to give himself more time to find a school to compete for a starting job.
UNDATED (AP) — The SEC, which regularly shows its strength in the NFL draft at other positions, may be on track to finally have a banner draft for quarterbacks. Tua Tagovailoa, Joe Burrow and Jake Fromm give the SEC a strong chance to have more than one quarterback taken in the first round of the 2020 draft. That would be a first for the league.
UNDATED (AP) — James Wiseman headlines the nation's top recruiting class at Memphis, but he isn't the only first-year player that figures to make an impact this season. So does Cole Anthony at North Carolina, Vernon Carey Jr. at Duke, Nico Mannion at Arizona, Isaiah Stewart at Washington and Anthony Edwards at Georgia.
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Clemson said the NCAA has granted a waiver to Texas Tech transfer Khavon Moore to play this season for the Tigers. Moore transferred in May and has taken part in Clemson's workouts and in their run to the gold medal at the World University Games. Moore played only one game for the Red Raiders as he sat out most of the year with an injury. Moore is a 6-foot-8 sophomore from Macon, Georgia.
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi has launched its search for a new athletic director. Keith Carter has been serving as interim athletic director since Ross Bjork left in May. Bjork was Ole Miss' athletic director seven years before leaving for the same position at Texas A&M. Ole Miss alum and retired FedEx executive Mike Glenn will chair a search committee.
