The Cornhuskers have underachieved in a season in which they were a popular pick to win the Big Ten West. They are 4-4 and well behind Minnesota in the division race. Tension is palpable inside and outside the program. Frost has ripped his players inside and outside the locker room. A handful of new players have called out older players. A faction of the fan base is growing impatient.
ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — The Big Ten has reprimanded Penn State defensive tackle Antonio Shelton for spitting on a Michigan State player during a game. The conference also says it supports the one-game suspension Shelton was given by Penn State. Shelton will be out of the lineup for the fifth-ranked Nittany Lions during their game at No. 13 Minnesota. Shelton was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct after spitting on an opponent midway through the fourth quarter against the Spartans.
ATLANTA (AP) — The chairman of the NCAA board of governors says the association hopes to avoid a court battle against states that are attempting to pass laws aimed at dismantling NCAA rules. The NCAA board voted on Tuesday to allow athletes to profit from their names, images and likenesses. But much work still needs to be done to determine how that will work within NCAA rules.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — It's been a struggle for coach Michael Locksley in his first year as Maryland's football coach, and there's no indication it's going to get any easier. The Terrapins have lost five of six, are coping with two injured quarterbacks and must face Top 25 mainstays Michigan and Ohio State over the next weekends. Maryland appears well on its way to a fifth straight losing season as it prepares for Saturday's clash against the 15th-ranked Wolverines.
