Astros in command
WASHINGTON (AP) _ The Houston Astros are trying to even the World Series at two games apiece as they take on the Nationals in Washington.
The Astros grew their lead to 8-1 in the top of the seventh, thanks to Alex Bregman’s grand slam off Fernando Rodney.
Robinson Chirinos (chih-REE’-nohs) gave Houston a 4-0 lead by homering for the second consecutive game, a two-run blast off Nationals pitcher Patrick Corbin in the fourth inning.
Alex Bregman and Yuli Gurriel (YOO’-lee gur-ee-EHL’) jumped on Corbin with RBI singles in the top of the first.
Washington’s only run came on a bases-loaded grounder by Juan Soto.
José Urquidy (ur-KWEE’-dee) has given the Astros their best starting performance of the series so far, outdoing Gerrit Cole, Justin Verlander and Zack Greinke (GREHN’-kee). Urquidy was reached for just two hits and no walks while striking out four over five innings.
Corbin left after six innings, charged with four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
T25 COLLEGE FOOTBALL-SCHEDULE
K-State stuns Oklahoma
UNDATED (AP) _ Oklahoma is the latest top-5 team to suffer its first loss of the season.
Skyler Thompson threw for 213 yards and ran for four touchdowns as Kansas State stunned the fifth-ranked Sooners, 48-41. James Gilbert ran for 105 yards and a touchdown, and Joshua Youngblood also reached the end zone, as the Wildcats snapped the Sooners' nation-leading 22-game road winning streak.
Jalen Hurts threw for 395 yards and a touchdown while running for 95 yards and three more. But the Sooners couldn't overcome a multitude of mistakes, including two turnovers, costly penalties and the ejection of cornerback Parnell Motley in the second quarter.
In other Top 25 action:
_ Joe Burrow threw for a TD, ran for another and finished with 321 yards passing as second-ranked LSU held off No. 9 Auburn, 23-20. Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for 136 yards and touchdown for LSU, which wasn't able to put away the Tigers until Derrick Dillon recovered an onside kick following an Auburn TD with 2:31 left. Bo Nix completed 15 of 35 passes for 157 yards and one late touchdown to Seth Williams that gave Auburn the opportunity to set up a meaningful onside kick.
_ Third-ranked Ohio State is 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the Big Ten after J.K. Dobbins rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns in the Buckeyes’ 38-7 dismantling of No. 13 Wisconsin. Dobbins outperformed Badgers Heisman Trophy candidate Jonathan Taylor, who could muster only 52 yards rushing after averaging 137 yards coming in. Chase Young tied an Ohio State record with four sacks, including two strip sacks that led to fumbles recovered by linebacker Pete Werner.
_ Sean Clifford threw three of his four touchdown passes to Pat Freiermuth in leading sixth-ranked Penn State to a 28-7 victory at Michigan State. A fumbled punt by Michigan State set up Clifford's 6-yard touchdown toss to Freiermuth in the third quarter. The Nittany Lions had lost five of their previous six against the Spartans.
_ Sam Ehlinger's career-high four interceptions weren’t enough for 15th-ranked Texas in a 37-27 loss to TCU. Freshman Max Duggan finished with a career-best 273 yards passing, throwing for two scores and running for another while also leading the Horned Frogs with 72 yards rushing.
_ Rodney Smith ran for 103 yards and Minnesota improved to 8-0 for the first time since 1941 by blasting Maryland, 52-10. Seth Green had two touchdown runs and Tanner Morgan was 12-of-21 passing for 138 yards and two scores for the Golden Gophers.
_ Nate Stanley had 179 yards passing with a touchdown and the defense allowed just 202 yards of total offense as No. 20 Iowa coasted to a 20-0 shutout of Northwestern.
_ No. 21 Appalachian State rolled to a 30-3 win at South Alabama as Zac Thomas threw for a touchdown and ran for another.
_ Freshman Spencer Sanders threw for 249 yards and two TDs in Oakland State’s 34-27 upset of 23rd-rated Iowa State.
NBA-SCHEDULE
Heat win at Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE (AP) _ The Miami Heat are off to a somewhat surprising 2-0 start after rallying past one of the NBA’s title contenders.
Goran Dragic (DRAH’-gihch) dropped in 25 points and Bam Adebayo came within two assists of a triple-double as the Heat downed the Bucks, 131-126 at Milwaukee. Adebayo delivered 19 points and 13 rebounds for Miami, which trailed by 11 before outscoring Milwaukee, 49-34 in the fourth quarter and overtime.
Justise Winslow also had a double-double with 10 points and 13 boards, while Kendrick Nunn scored 18. Nunn was among six Miami players with at least 14 points.
Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH’-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON’-poh) had 29 points, 17 rebounds and nine assists for the 1-1 Bucks, while Khris Middleton chipped in 25 points.

_ Tobias Harris scored 29 points against his former team in the 76ers' 117-111 victory over the Pistons. Al Horford added 23 points and Ben Simmons had 13 with 10 assists as Philadelphia moved to 2-0. Derrick Rose led Detroit with 31 points in 27 minutes, but the Pistons missed 15 free throws in a game that was close until the closing moments.
_ Kemba Walker broke out of his shooting slump by nailing seven 3-pointers and scoring a season-high 32 points to highlight the Celtics’ 118-95 rout of the Knicks. Walker missed 28 of his 40 shots in Boston’s first two games before shooting 11-for-17 versus New York. Jaylen Brown chipped in 19 points and Jayson Tatum added 15 and nine rebounds as the 2-1 Celtics kept the Knicks winless.
_ Trae Young contributed Atlanta’s final eight points and finished with 39 in a 103-99 victory against the Magic. Orlando had a 96-95 lead until Young hit a pair of layups and a 3-pointer to send the Hawks to their second straight win. He was the only Hawk with more than 10 points, and he added nine assists and seven boards.

Mrazek, Hurricanes blank Hawks
UNDATED (AP) _ The Carolina Hurricanes posted their second shutout season after allowing 13 goals during a three-game losing streak.
Petr Mrazek (muh-RA’-zehk) turned back 32 shots and Andrei Svechnikov (SVEHCH'-nih-kahv) scored twice as the Canes blanked the Blackhawks, 4-0. Nino Niederreiter (NEE'-dur-eye-tur) had a goal and one assist to back Mrazek, who posted his second shutout of the season and 20th of his career.
Chicago has dropped four straight and has scored just twice in its last three games.
Elsewhere on NHL ice:
_ Tuukka (TOO’-kah) Rask stopped 26 shots and David Pastrnak (PAHS’-tur-nahk) scored his team-high 11th goal a first-period power play as the Bruins blanked the Blues, 3-0. Rask helped Boston kill off four St. Louis power plays in his second shutout of the season and 47th of his career. Anders Bjork provided a second-period goal and Brandon Carlo added an empty-netter as the Bruins improved to 7-1-2.
_ Nashville came away with a 3-2 win over the Lightning as Ryan Ellis scored 3:15 into overtime. Tampa Bay led 2-1 until Roman Josi scored a power-play goal with 5:13 left in regulation. Nashville won its third in a row overall and is 13-1-2 in its last 16 games against the Bolts.
_ Joel Armia (ahr-MEE’-ah) scored a power-play goal seven seconds into the third period to break a 2-2 deadlock in the Canadiens’ 5-2 verdict over the Maple Leafs. Jonathan Drouin (DROO’-an) scored twice and Armia had an assist as Montreal improved to 2-0 versus Toronto this season. The Habs ended a two-game slide and handed the Leafs their third loss in four games.
_ The Flyers scored five unanswered goals over the final 9:08 to earn a 7-4 win over the Blue Jackets. James van Riemsdyk (REEMZ’-dyk) tied the game with his second goal of the night before Kevin Hayes furnished a short-handed tally to put Philadelphia ahead for good. Hayes, van Riemsdyk and Jakub Voracek each had three-point performances in the Flyers’ third straight win.

Brees back in, Ryan out
UNDATED (AP) _ The New Orleans Saints will have their record-setting quarterback under center.
A person familiar with the situation says Drew Brees will start against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. Brees missed five games following surgery to repair a torn thumb ligament, but the Saints won each time with Teddy Bridgewater running the offense.
Brees is the NFL's all-time leader in yards passing with 74,845 and completions with 6,621.
Meanwhile, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has been declared out for Sunday’s game at Seattle because of a sprained right ankle suffered in last weekend’s 37-10 loss to the Rams.
Ryan ran in Friday's practice, raising hopes that he would be able to play. Instead, Matt Schaub will start for the Falcons.
Ryan had started 154 consecutive games since 2009.

_ The Jets have released guard Kelechi Osemele a day after he had shoulder surgery on Friday without the team's approval. The Jets were made aware of Osemele's plan to have surgery, but because he was not with the team and the surgery wasn't approved, it was considered an "unexcused absence." Osemele's agent says in a statement the Jets owe the lineman the balance of his contract. He also will be looking to recoup all money lost through fines for what the team considered unexcused absences.
_ Offensive tackle Russell Okung has been moved up to the Chargers' active roster and is expected to see his first action of the season Sunday against Chicago. Okung had been on the non-football injury list since the start of the season after he suffered a pulmonary embolism during a June 1 offseason workout at the team facility.
NASCAR-MARTINSVILLE
Hamlin wins pole, Elliott bumped to back of field
MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) _ Denny Hamlin has won the pole at Martinsville Speedway, where the five-time winner will attempt to lock himself into NASCAR's championship race.
Hamlin turned a lap at 97.840 mph to earn the top starting spot in Sunday's playoff race, the first since the field of contenders was trimmed from 12 to eight.
Chase Elliott qualified second but will be dropped to the back of the field after blowing out an engine during practice. Martin Truex Jr. qualified third and was followed by four Ford drivers, with Ryan Blaney at sixth the highest of the title contenders.
F1-MEXICAN GP
Verstappen Snags Mexican GP pole
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Two-time defending race champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull ended Ferrari's run of five consecutive pole positions, clocking the fastest time at the Mexican Grand Prix just before a crash by Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas ended qualifying early.
The wreck ended the pole bid for Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel, who will start second and third.
Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton will start fourth as he goes for a sixth season championship.
PGA-ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP
Woods leads through 36
INZAI CITY, Japan (AP) _ Tiger Woods shot a second straight 6-under 64 to take a two-stroke lead after the second round of the rain-hit Zozo Championship.
Woods picked up where he left off after a 64 in Thursday's opening round with a birdie on the first hole, one of seven on the day that gave him a 36-hole total of 12-under 128, two shots ahead of Gary Woodland.
