Astros beat Nats to get within 2-1

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Home-field advantage has meant nothing so far in this World Series.

The Houston Astros are within two games to one after getting a strong performance from their bullpen in a 4-1 victory over the Nationals in Washington. Houston bounced back after dropped the first two games at home by a combined 17-7 margin, including a 12-3 loss in Game 2.

The Astros received two-hit ball from their relievers over the final 4 1/3 innings. Josh James got it going by striking out Ryan Zimmerman with runners on second and third to and the fourth inning, keeping the Astros ahead, 3-1. Will Harris retired all five batters he faced and Roberto Osuna worked a one-hit ninth to get the save.

Houston’s bullpen shut the door after Zack Greinke (GREHN’-kee) was reached for one run and seven hits over 4 2/3s.

Michael Brantley delivered a pair of RBI singles and Jose Altuve (al-TOO’-vay) was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Robinson Chirinos (chih-REE’-nohs) added a solo homer in the sixth to make it a 4-1 game and chase Nats starter Anibal (AN’-ih-bahl) Sanchez, who allowed 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Victor Robles laced an RBI triple in the fourth for the Nationals, who saw their eight-game postseason winning streak come to an end.

It was the first World Series game in Washington since 1933, when the Senators hosted the New York Giants.

The Nationals will send Patrick Corbin to the mound in Game 4 on Saturday against Jose Urquidy (ur-KWEE’-dee), although Houston manager AJ Hinch expects to make heavy use of his bullpen.

In other World Series notes:

_ A day after President Donald Trump said he plans to attend Game 5, the Nationals announced the ceremonial first pitch at that game will be thrown out by chef José Andrés, a vocal critic of Trump. Andrés withdrew from plans to open a restaurant in the Trump International Hotel in Washington following controversial comments by Trump about Mexican immigrants during the presidential campaign.

_ Trump plans to arrive for the fifth game after the first pitch and leave before the final out. Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said he spoke with Trump, and the president decided it would be least disruptive to fans to do it that way.

Carrasco wins Clemente Award

UNDATED (AP) _ Cleveland Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco has won the 2019 Roberto Clemente Award is given annually by Major League Baseball to honor sportsmanship and community involvement.

Despite being diagnosed with leukemia in May, Carrasco never slowed in his efforts. He visited children with cancer at hospitals and remained involved in humanitarian causes to bring food and medication to his native Venezuela. He received the award before Game 3 of the World Series.

_ Rangers outfielder Shin-Soo Choo has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder. The 37-year-old Choo is going into the final season of a $130 million, seven-year contract. His playing has been split between designated hitter and outfield the past three seasons.

_ A person with knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press the Red Sox have hired Rays executive Chaim Bloom as chief baseball officer, a move first reported by the New York Post. The 36-year-old Yale graduate replaces Dave Dombrowski, who was let go less than a year after the team he built set a franchise record for victories and won the World Series.

_ Major League Baseball is conducting a wider probe of the Astros that goes beyond the assistant general manager who was fired this week for inappropriate behavior, concerned about the team's initial denial. Houston terminated Brandon Taubman on Thursday, saying he directed inappropriate comments at female reporters during a clubhouse celebration following Game 6 of the AL Championship Series last weekend. Commissioner Rob Manfred says there are aspects that go beyond the incident, causing MLB to seek additional facts.

_ Umpire Joe West is suing retired player Paul Lo Duca for defamation. The former catcher alleged in an April podcast on The Action Network that West gave pitcher Billy Wagner a bigger strike zone in exchange for letting the umpire borrow a vintage car.

NBA-SCHEDULE

Celtics rally past Raptors

UNDATED (AP) _ The Boston Celtics were able to knock off the defending NBA champs despite shooting 38% on Friday.

Jaylen Brown had 25 points, including a key 3-pointer in the closing minutes as the Celtics held off the Raptors, 112-106. Kemba Walker contributed 11 of his 22 points while Boston was outscoring Toronto 36-24 in the final period.

Jayson Tatum finished with 25 points and nine rebounds to help Boston bounce back from its season-opening loss at Philadelphia.

The Raptors fell to 1-1 despite shooting 18 for 36 from 3-point range.

Pascal Siakam (see-A’-kam) scored 33 points and Kyle Lowry nailed six 3’s while adding 29 points for Toronto.

_ Jamal Murray scored seven of his 27 points in overtime to push the Nuggets to a 108-107 win over the Suns. Murray hit two free throws with 19.4 seconds remaining. Nikola Jokic finished with 23 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists to help the Nuggets escape after Ricky Rubio nailed three free throws for Phoenix with 1.8 seconds left in regulation.

_ Damian Lillard scored 13 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter of the Portland Trail Blazers’ 122-112 victory over the Kings. Hassan Whiteside had 22 points and nine rebounds despite sitting out the entire fourth quarter, and C.J. McCollum scored 19. De'Aaron Fox had 28 points, five assists and six rebounds for Sacramento, which is 0-2 under new coach Luke Walton.

_ Luka Doncic (DAHN’-chihch) highlighted his triple-double by scoring eight of his 25 points in the final five minutes to send the Mavericks past the Pelicans, 123-116. Doncic also had 10 rebounds and 10 assists, while Kristaps Porzingis (KRIHS’-tahps pohr-ZIHN’-gihs) added 24 points and five blocks. Delon Wright scored 18 for the 2-0 Mavs.

_ Anthony Davis and LeBron James led the Lakers to a 95-86 victory against the Jazz. Davis had 21 points and seven rebounds during his home debut for Los Angeles, while James registered 32 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. Troy Daniels hit four 3-pointers and scored 15 points for the Lakers, who forced 23 turnovers.

_ The Nets got their first win in two games as Kyrie Irving scored 26 points and made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 21 seconds left to lead a 113-109 decision over the Knicks. Irving furnished five straight points down the stretch after New York took a three-point lead. Spencer Dinwiddie added 20 points for Brooklyn, while Allonzo Trier had 22 for the Knicks.

_ Karl-Anthony Towns fell two assists shy of a triple-double and the Timberwolves moved to 2-0 by slamming the Hornets, 121-99. Towns delivered 37 points on 13 of 18 from the field and added 15 rebounds. Andrew Wiggins added 16 points for Minnesota, which outscored Charlotte 45-25 in the third quarter to take a 22-point lead.

_ Zach LaVine (lah-VEEN’) shot 4-for-8 from beyond the arc and scored 37 points as the Bulls picked up their first win of the season, 110-102 against the Grizzlies. Coby White contributed 21 of his 25 points in the second half after Memphis carried a 13-point advantage into the break. Chicago took the lead for good when LaVine scored on a drive with 1:31 left.

_ Thomas Bryant’s 21 points and 11 rebounds helped the Wizards earn a 97-85 win at Oklahoma City. Rookie forward Rui Hachimura scored 19 points and Bradley Beal added 17 for Washington, which closed on a 14-2 run for its first win of the season. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored a career-high 28 points in the loss.

Mahomes out...Ryan questionable

UNDATED (AP) _ The Kansas City Chiefs have ruled quarterback Patrick Mahomes out for Sunday night's showdown with the Green Bay Packers.

Mahomes dislocated his right kneecap last Thursday night in Denver and was a limited participant in practice all week. The Chiefs decided to give the reigning league MVP at least one game off as he recovers. The injury can sometimes sideline a player for several months.

In other NFL news:

_ Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan returned to practice from a right ankle sprain and is listed as questionable Sunday’s game against Seattle. The 2016 NFL MVP was a limited participant in Friday's session. If he is unable to play Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Matt Schaub will make his first start since 2015 with Baltimore.

_ The Jaguars will be without starting linebackers Najee Goode and Leon Jacobs for Sunday’s game against the Jets because of injuries. Jacksonville backup linebacker Quincy Williams is also sidelined for the game.

_ Jets guard Kelechi Osemele has undergone surgery on his ailing right shoulder despite the team not approving the procedure. Osemele has said he needs the surgery now, but the team believes it can be delayed and he can play through it.

_ Cleveland coach Freddie Kitchens is apparently shaking up his offensive live. Left tackle Greg Robinson says he's been told he’s been benched for Sunday’s game against New England.

_ Police say a Rhode Island man visiting the Patriots Hall of Fame took a Tom Brady jersey off a display and walked off with it. He was caught while still in the vicinity of Gillette Stadium, wearing the jersey under his jacket. He’s facing a larceny charge.

NHL-SCHEDULE

Sabres stay hot

UNDATED (AP) _ The Buffalo Sabres keep chugging along at a great pace, while the Detroit Red Wings continue to struggle.

Linus Ullmark turned back 41 shots and Sam Reinhart scored his fifth goal as the Sabres blanked the Red Wings, 2-0 for their seventh win in nine games. Jake McCabe notched his first goal of the season and Jack Eichel (EYE’-kul) had two assists to back Ullmark’s first shutout of the season and third of his career.

The Sabres improved to 9-2-1 while sending Detroit to its seventh consecutive loss.

Jimmy Howard made 23 saves for the Red Wings.

Elsewhere on NHL ice:

_ The Capitals wiped out a 5-1 deficit over the last 20 minutes and 1 second of regulation before TJ Oshie (OH’-shee) and Nicklas Backstrom scored in the shootout to send Washington to a 6-5 win over the Canucks. Evgeni Kuznetsov (kooz-NET’-sahv) scored twice and Michal Kempny tallied twice in a three-minute stretch of the third period to knot the score. Ilya Samsonov (EEL’-yah sam-SOH’-nahv) stopped 29 shots as the Caps won for the fifth time in six games.

_ The Islanders picked up their sixth straight win as Nick Leddy scored twice and had an assist in a 4-2 verdict over the Senators. Leddy netted his second goal on a penalty shot and initially was credited with New York’s first hat trick by a defenseman since Denis Potvin in March 1982, but the third goal was later awarded to Matt Martin. Thomas Greiss (grys) handled 32 shots for the Isles, who have their longest October winning streak since an eight-game run 37 years ago.

_ Nazem Kadri (NA’-zehm KA’-dree) and Matt Calvert each scored twice as the Avalanche hammered the Golden Knights, 6-1 to end up 4-1-1 on their six-game road trip. Pierre-Edouard Bellemare had a goal and two assists against his former team to help Colorado improve to a league-leading 8-1-1. Cale Makar (mah-KAHR’) also tallied and Philipp Grubauer finished with 25 saves in the rout.

_ Morgan Rielly scored the tiebreaking goal with 5:29 left in the Maple Leafs’ 4-1 victory over the Sharks. Mitch Marner assisted on goals by Ilya Mikheyev (EEL’-yah mih-KAY’-ehv) and Auston Matthews 18 seconds apart in the final minute to wrap up Toronto’s first win in three games. Frederik Andersen faced only 16 shots and blanked San Jose after Kevin Labanc (lah-BANK’) scored midway through the opening stanza.

_ Antti Raanta (AN’-tee RAHN’-tah) was outstanding in making 32 saves as the Coyotes beat the Devils, 5-3 to finish 2-1 on their trek through the New York area. Barrett Hayton scored his first NHL goal to break a 3-3 deadlock 1:45 into the third period. Nick Schmaltz, Michael Grabner and Oliver Ekman-Larsson also scored as Arizona won for the fifth time in six games.

Blues' Tarasenko out

ST. LOUIS (AP) _ St. Louis Blues forward Vladimir Tarasenko will not travel with the team for weekend games at Boston and Detroit after suffering an unspecified upper-body injury in a win over Los Angeles Thursday night. Tarasenko left the game in the first period after getting tangled up with Kings defenseman Sean Walker on a partial break. General manager Doug Armstrong says Tarasenko will be re-evaluated when the team returns following Sunday's game against the Red Wings.

_ Hockey Hall of Famer Dale Hawerchuk (HOW’-ur-chuhk) is fighting stomach cancer. The 56-year-old former Winnipeg Jets star is getting chemotherapy treatment after taking a leave of absence as coach of the OHL’s Barrie Colts in September.

WORLD CUP-WOMEN'S GS

Teenager Robinson edges Shiffrin to win World Cup opener

SOELDEN, Austria (AP) — New Zealand teenager Alice Robinson edged Olympic champion Mikaela Shiffrin to win the World Cup season-opening giant slalom on Saturday.

Robinson, who trailed Shiffrin by 0.14 seconds after the opening run, was one-fifth of a second faster than the American in the final run. She won her first World Cup race in only her 11th start.

Tessa Worley of France, who won the race last year, was 0.36 behind in third.

The 17-year-old Robinson, who is working with former Lindsey Vonn coaches Chris Knight and Jeff Fergus, won the junior world title in GS in February. She left her mark at the World Cup Finals the following month, when she finished runner-up to Shiffrin in the last race of the season.

It was the first women's World Cup giant slalom win by a skier from New Zealand.

LPGA-SOUTH KOREA

South Korean players lead at LPGA tournament in Busan

BUSAN, South Korea (AP) — South Koreans Somi Lee and Seung Yeon Lee were tied for the third-round lead Saturday at the Buick Ladies Championship, the second tournament on the LPGA's four-tournament Asian swing.

Somi Lee shot 67 and Yeon Lee 68 and had 54-hole totals of 13-under 203.

Ha Na Jang was in third place, a stroke behind, after a 68.

Amy Yang (67), Busan-born Australian Su Oh (67) and second-round leader Danielle Kang (71) were two strokes behind.

Charley Hull (69) was 5-under, tied with Brooke Henderson (70).

The LPGA Tour's Asian swing moves to Taiwan next week with a fourth stop in Japan. Kang won the first stop in Shanghai last week.
