CEDAR CITY — A man who once faced a possible death sentence will end up serving many years in prison instead.

On Tuesday, Mark S. Mair, 30, of Cedar City, was ordered to serve two consecutive terms of 15 years to life at the Utah State Prison for his convictions of murder and attempted murder.

On the morning of July 24, 2016, Mair went to the trailer home of his ex-girlfriend, 515 N. 400 West in Cedar City, pushed a fan out of the bedroom window and opened fire on his ex-girlfriend and 34-year-old Justin Hanna who were in bed together. Hanna died; the woman was not injured.

Mair fled to Grand Junction, Colorado, where he was later arrested.

After several delays in the case, due in part to mental competency examinations, Mair was ordered to stand trial in November 2017. The Iron County Attorney’s Office announced on Jan. 16, 2018, that it intended to seek the death penalty.

On Aug. 22, 2019, Mair pleaded guilty to murder and attempted aggravated murder, charges that were reduced from capital offenses to first-degree felonies as part of a plea deal.
