PROVO — A Provo man was charged Monday with brandishing a gun at a Provo High School student.

Joel Salazar, 18, is charged in 4th District Court with aggravated assault, a third-degree felony, and possession of a firearm on school property, a class A misdemeanor.

Salazar — a former student at Provo High School — got into a fight on Sept. 25 with two current students, according to charging documents. Police were called and they questioned all three people.

Officers learned that a week earlier, on Sept. 18, Salazar was driving near the school when he swerved his vehicle toward a student on the sidewalk, nearly hitting him, the charges state. Salazar’s girlfriend told police “she had to grab the steering wheel to prevent (Salazar) from hitting the student.”

On Sept. 24, Salazar drove past the same student and “raised a handgun (without pointing it) so the student could see it,” according to the charges.

The next day, Salazar was in the student parking lot dropping off a girl when the student he allegedly threatened approached him with a second student, according to a police affidavit. The three got into a fight, which prompted administrators to call police.

Police searched Salazar’s car and found a 22-caliber handgun and a realistic-looking BB gun, the charges state.

The other two students were arrested for investigation of assault.
