PROVO — A BYU student died after he was struck by a vehicle while longboarding near the school’s campus Sunday night, police said Monday.

Jonathan Godoy Morales, a BYU student from Chile, died from injuries suffered, Provo police said. Police had initially said he was 22, but later clarified he was 25.

Emergency crews responded to a report of a crash at the intersection of Canyon Road (150 East) and Stadium Avenue about 8:15 p.m., according to Provo police detective Nick DuPaix.

According to police, Morales was riding a longboard west on Stadium Avenue and attempted to cross Canyon Road when he was nearly struck by two vehicles traveling in both directions of the road. Another vehicle, also traveling south, then collided with Morales.

“It was quite a significant accident, where the (longboarder) did fly several feet away from the vehicle,” Dupaix said.

Morales was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries.

Meanwhile, police on Monday were trying to piece together how the crash happened. It wasn’t known how fast the vehicle or the longboarder were going at the time of the crash. Dupaix said the area is typically dark at night but wasn't sure if that factored in the crash either.

The department’s crash investigation team was sent to the scene to reconstruct the crash. It remains under investigation.
