WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is allowing nationwide enforcement of a new Trump administration rule that prevents most Central American immigrants from seeking asylum in the United States. The justices' order late Wednesday temporarily undoes a lower-court ruling that had blocked the new asylum policy in some states along the southern border. The policy is meant to deny asylum to anyone who passes through another country on the way to the U.S. without seeking protection there.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Roughly half the states and some 2,000 local governments have agreed to a tentative deal with Purdue Pharma, but the agreement announced Wednesday falls short of the national settlement the OxyContin maker had sought. Several state attorneys general say they will continue to pursue the company in bankruptcy court and press ahead with separate state suits against the Sackler family, which owns the company. They say the deal does not provide enough accountability for Purdue's role in the epidemic.
NEW YORK (AP) — Hours after the official ceremony ended, crowds lingered into the night at the Sept. 11 memorial in New York. As darkness fell, people filled the streets around the firehouse at the southwest corner of the memorial plaza Wednesday to listen to a bagpipe and drum corps play songs saluting the terror attack victims. Overhead, the twin beams of the "Tribute in Light" were visible. The annual light show represents the fallen twin towers of the World Trade Center.
HOUSTON (AP) — The top Democratic presidential contenders will finally be on one debate stage. On Thursday in Houston, Joe Biden will try to solidify his early lead over Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, while Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg will look to reclaim some lost momentum. The ABC News debate has 10 candidates and will air on a broadcast network with a post-Labor Day uptick in interest in the race. That could give candidates their largest audience yet as the race heads into the fall months.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal government is taking aim at the e-cigarette industry, setting out to ban thousands of flavors in the wake of a surge in vaping by underage users. Flavored nicotine formulas like "grape slushie" and "strawberry cotton candy" have been driving sales _ and alarming parents and health authorities across the country. President Donald Trump made the surprise announcement Wednesday.
