ORDERVILLE, Kane County — One person died and two others were severely injured Sunday in a rollover collision in Kane County, troopers said.
The crash occurred about 3:35 p.m. as three vehicles were traveling south on U.S. 89 south of Orderville, the Utah Highway Patrol said. A car, U-Haul and a pickup truck were driving in that order in the right lane, troopers said.
The road in that area has two lanes.
The pickup truck moved to the inside lane to pass the U-Haul and car, troopers said. While the truck began moving, the U-Haul also moved left to pass the car, which forced the pickup off the road, according to the UHP.
The pickup truck rolled down an embankment, ejecting three passengers in the back seat, troopers said. One of those passengers died on scene. The other two were “severely injured” and were flown to a hospital.
Additional information about the deceased passenger and the others who were injured, including their names or where they’re from, was not immediately available.
The two passengers in the front seat of the truck suffered minor injuries and declined medical treatment, the UHP said. They were wearing seat belts during the crash while those in the back were not, according to troopers.
“Given the minimal damage to the passenger compartment, it is likely the rear passengers would have not been as severely injured and killed had they been properly restrained,” the UHP said in a statement.
The driver of the U-Haul didn’t stop after the crash. Troopers believe the driver “may not have realized their movement forced the pickup off the road.”
