OGDEN — An 18-year-old from Layton was arrested after troopers said he fired a single gunshot out of his car window in an apparent road rage incident.

Officials from the Utah Highway Patrol said a driver made an attempt to merge along the southbound Interstate 15 onramp at 31st Street in Ogden Saturday.

As he tried to merge into oncoming traffic, troopers said a man on the interstate fired a handgun in an apparent attempt to scare the driver.

“As they were getting on, they became involved in a road situation where two males were trying to merge into one lane, and one wouldn’t let the other in,” said Sergeant Michael Irvine. “They became enraged with one another.”

Irvine said the two drivers exchanged words, as well as hand gestures, before 18-year-old Felix Anguiano grabbed a handgun and fired the single round out his window. Irvine said the other driver called 911 dispatchers and then continued to follow Anguiano.

“It’s probably not the smart thing to do,” Irvine said. “(The) best thing to do is just pull over, call 911, give us a description of the vehicle and license plate, and let us handle it from that point in time.”

State troopers later caught up with Anguiano at his home in Layton, where they said he admitted to firing the weapon, but said it was intended only to scare the other driver.

Irvine pointed out that road rage of any kind is dangerous.

“Anytime you’ve got two vehicles going down the freeway at freeway speeds, swerving at one another, brake-checking one another, it becomes very hazardous for them and all other people around them,” Irvine said.

Officials said the gunshot did not make contact with the other driver or his vehicle, but it was still a dangerous situation.

Anguiano was booked into the Weber County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, aggravated assault, firing a weapon from a vehicle, possession of a firearm by a restricted person, along with a couple of drug possession-related charges.
