PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press that the Philadelphia Eagles have signed 40-year-old quarterback Josh McCown. He is coming out of retirement to join his ninth team and play his 17th season. McCown provides insurance behind starting quarterback Carson Wentz after the Eagles lost two quarterbacks to injurieis in the first two preseason games.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — De'Aaron Fox of the Sacramento Kings has withdrawn from USA Basketball's national team, meaning the Americans now have 13 candidates for the 12-man World Cup roster. Fox told USA Basketball of his decision today, a few hours before the team was to head to Australia for a pair of exhibition games. The World Cup that starts in China this month.
MASON, Ohio (AP) — Ashleigh Barty has been upset by Svetlana Kuznetsova (svet-LAH'-nah kooz-NET'-soh-vah) 6-2, 6-4 in the Western & Southern Open semifinals, missing her chance to return to the No. 1 ranking ahead of the U.S. Open. Barty had slipped behind Naomi Osaka in the latest rankings. She would have jumped back ahead by winning today. Osaka, the defending U.S. Open champion, withdrew in the quarterfinals with a sore knee.
BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — Denny Hamlin has passed pre-race inspection and his car will start on the pole tonight at Bristol Motor Speedway. The Daytona 500 winner gave both Toyota and Joe Gibbs Racing its first pole of the season in qualifying yesterday, but the result wasn’t official until after inspection. Bristol marks a stretch of three final regular season races with seven open spots in the upcoming playoff field. Nine winners have already claimed berths in the 16-driver field.
PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. (AP) — A Massachusetts man and a Pennsylvania woman have won the grueling bicycle race up the highest peak in the northeastern United States. Erik Levinsohn, of Boston, and Stefanie Sydlik, of Pittsburgh, beat the competition in the men's and women's divisions of the 7.6-mile Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb to the summit at 6,288 feet today. Levinsohn crossed the finish line in 53 minutes and 42 seconds. Sydlik completed the race in 1 hour, 10 minutes and 34 seconds.
