SALT LAKE CITY — Police are trying to piece together what happened to a woman after she was found critically injured on a street Thursday morning.

At 9:45 a.m., Salt Lake City officers were called to a reported traffic accident at 1351 S. Jefferson Street, where they found the woman lying in the road with "severe injuries," said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Brandon Shearer.

"She was in the street, so they thought that she had been involved in a traffic accident. But when officers arrived, there was no vehicles here," Shearer said.

The woman suffered "multiple injuries" and was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Police didn't provide her age.

While the initial call was for a traffic accident, police say it now appears the woman may have been assaulted prior to her being found. They said they don't believe she was shot or stabbed.

The woman wasn't able to talk with officers at the scene, but police hope to interview her later to gather more information. "At this point; (we're) not sure what happened," Shearer said.

Police said they are also looking for a black Nissan SUV in relation to the incident. Police didn't have a model of the vehicle or a license plate number.

Shearer said the general area where the woman was found can be busy at times, but there isn't as much traffic in the alley because it is a dead-end street. He asked that anyone who may have witnessed anything or may have surveillance cameras in the area to call Salt Lake police at 801-799-3000.

Further details about the incident weren't immediately available.
