WHITERIVER, Ariz. (AP) — A former longtime chairman of the White Mountain Apache Tribe has died at age 89. Tribal officials say Ronnie Lupe died Monday. Lupe served as the tribe's chairman for 36 years before leaving office in May 2018 after deciding not to seek a 10th term. Prior to his long tenure as chairman, Lupe served in the U.S. Marine Corps and as a member of White Mountain Apache Tribal Council. Funeral services are pending, A list of Lupe's survivors wasn't immediately available Monday night.
PAGE, Ariz. (AP) — Glen Canyon National Recreation Area authorities say an Arizona man has apparently drowned in Lake Powell. They say 33-year-old Albert Shortman of Cow Springs was pronounced dead at the scene by the Coconino County Medical Examiner on Sunday. His body was transported to Flagstaff for an autopsy. National Park Service rangers at the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area received a report of a missing person on Sunday morning. A dive team found Shortman's body near the Wahweap Swim Beach.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah death row inmate whose double-murder case was featured in the book "Under the Banner of Heaven" has inched closer to becoming the first person to be executed by firing squad in nearly a decade. Ron Lafferty lost his latest appeal Monday and could be executed as soon as next year. The last time a firing squad was used in the U.S. was in 2010 in Utah. Lafferty was convicted of killing his sister-in-law and her baby daughter in 1984 because she resisted his polygamist beliefs.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Lawyers for a man accused of running a multi-million-dollar opioid ring out of his suburban Salt Lake City basement say he was involved in drugs but wasn't capable of running such a major operation. Defense attorney Greg Skordas said Monday that 29-year-old Aaron Shamo has a learning disability and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder that make him incapable of orchestrating the complicated scheme that prosecutors laid out in court documents. Skordas spoke during opening statements.
