UPDATE: As of 5:15 a.m. Tuesday, Gentile Street has reopened in the gas leak area, Layton City officials said on Twitter. - - - - - -

LAYTON — A natural gas leak closed roads and caused evacuations in Layton Monday afternoon, officials said. Gentile Street was closed between Main Street and Wasatch Drive, and businesses were evacuated on Gentile Street between the I-15 overpass and Main Street, according to officials. Layton police anticipated Gentile Street would open around midnight, but later said they need additional equipment from Salt Lake City and the street will remain closed until further notice.

Layton Fire Chief Kevin Ward said the leak happened when a construction crew hit the 4-inch main gas line. He estimated about five businesses were evacuated due to the leak.

The leak was first reported by Layton City officials via Twitter a little after 2 p.m. The leak was secured by 7 p.m., but officials said high concentrations of gas remained in the area which prompted officials to keep roads closed.

Layton fire and Dominion Energy crews remained on scene to ensure safety into the evening hours.
