WEST JORDAN — A man wanted by law enforcement in California was shot during an altercation with police in West Jordan on Friday night, officers say.

West Jordan police officers received a call from the State Bureau of Investigations on Friday evening around 6:30 p.m. indicating that they needed assistance locating Jose Martinez, 34, a wanted fugitive from California, according to West Jordan Police Sgt. J.C. Holt. A warrant had been out for Martinez’s arrest in an investigation of aggravated kidnapping case, according to Holt.

After several hours of pursuit, police were able to locate Martinez with the use of K9s.

Police found Martinez at a condo on 6800 South and 3800 West, Prairie Dunes Way, Holt reported. The condo belonged to a family member of Martinez, Holt said. Martinez had barricaded himself alone inside the building and insinuated to police that he had a weapon in his possession.

Officers first attempted to negotiate their way inside, but SWAT was called when Martinez refused to leave the building, Holt reported. The officers got consent and a key to enter the condo, where they immediately faced an altercation with the fugitive.

Several shots were fired during the altercation, and Martinez was shot and killed in the process, according to Holt. A West Jordan police officer was involved in using force and firing his weapon, and the West Valley Police Department is handling the investigating, Holt said.

Holt said it remains under investigation if whether or not Martinez was armed.
