ALPINE — Two people were killed in a helicopter crash in Utah County, officials confirm.

Authorities were searching the area for an overdue helicopter with two people inside when the aircraft was located by Utah Department of Public Safety personnel, according to images provided by KSL Chopper 5 helicopter.

Both people were killed in the crash, Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon said.

Officials have not released the identities of the deceased pending family notification.

Cannon told KSL that the helicopter was reported overdue by family members of those onboard Friday afternoon, prompting a search from Air Force personnel and local authorities for the aircraft.

The four-seat Robinson R-44 helicopter left Vernal Regional Airport en route to South Valley Regional Airport in the Salt Lake Valley just before 2 p.m. Friday afternoon, according to the Federal Aviation Authority, which issued an entry-level alert notification for local authorities and search crews.

The search area was in the Horsetail Falls area, just north of Alpine, Cannon said.

Further details about the crash were not immediately available.
