LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON — A quick shot of snow reminded Utahns that spring can be unpredictable. The fresh powder was exciting for skiers and snowboarders trying to stretch winter as far as it will go.

Snowbird saw seven inches of snow overnight. It is the only ski resort in Utah still open. Marketing director Brian Brown said the resort typically gets around 500 inches of snow during the winter. This year, they’ve gotten 664 inches with about a month still to go. Their season will likely extend at least into June.

“We’re really getting that question, ‘Is this going to be a July 4th year?' Fingers crossed that it will. I don’t believe that’s happened since 2011, so I personally would love to see that and we’ll just have to wait and see what happens,” Brown said.

Skiers and snowboarders rushed up the canyon to get some turns in to start the new month. While a picnic may have been appropriate in the Salt Lake Valley, the snow fans were perfectly happy in wintry conditions.

“Celebrating the new month with seven inches of fresh snow, which is amazing,” said Josie Nordrum.

After disappointing snowfall during the 2017-2018 season, they were especially thankful for this long season.

“You don’t expect this. It wasn’t happening last year. Now we have it this year, so I’m not taking it for granted,” said Jill Adler.
