KEARNS — Unified police officers looking for a gunman in a drive-by shooting ended up finding and arresting another person illegally possessing a firearm instead.
Thursday night, just before midnight, several residents called 911 reporting that shots had been fired in the area of 5350 S. 5000 West, said Unified Police Sgt. Melody Gray. No injuries or structural damage was reported.
Officers who responded to the scene found multiple shell casings, Gray said. Neighbors said they saw a tan or gold Cadillac drive away, possibly with juveniles inside.
Near 5600 West and 3500 South, officers spotted a vehicle that matched the description. Two teens, ages 16 and 17, were inside. Officers also recovered a gun from the vehicle, Gray said.
But upon further investigation, the sergeant said investigators determined the teens were not involved in the shooting. The 16-year-old was released. The 17-year-old boy was booked into juvenile detention for investigation of illegal possession of a firearm.
