WEST VALLEY CITY — Two individuals were arrested after a fatal hit-and-run in West Valley City on Tuesday night, police said Friday night.
A passerby found the body of Hairon Freyre-Portuondo lying in the road at about 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday near 1855 West and 3188 South, according to West Valley City police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku in a statement. Freyre-Portuondo died from his injuries likely resulting from being run over by a car, she said.
On Thursday, police were able to identify Anthony Borge, 19, as having been in the car that hit Freyre-Portuondo and brought him in for questioning, according to Vainuku. They were able to confirm that Borge had been in the vehicle and he was booked into Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of obstruction of justice.
Police then identified Kiersten Tomasini, 22, as the potential driver of the car that hit Freyre-Portuondo, Vainuku said. On Friday, police found Tomasini in a truck, which had been reported stolen to the Unified Police Department on April 1, that matched the suspect vehicle's description.
Police were able to take Tomasini into custody without incident. During an interview with Tomasini, West Valley City police determined she had been driving the truck that had run over Freyre-Portuondo, Vainuku said. Investigators believe there was a dispute in the vehicle that prompted Freyre-Portuondo to get out while the truck was moving, fell to the ground and was hit, Vainuku said.
Investigators determined Tomasini, though aware she had run over Freyre-Portuondo, did not attempt to help or call for help and instead fled the scene, Vainuku said. Tomasini was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of manslaughter, failure to remain at an accident involving serious injury, receiving or transferring a stolen vehicle, and obstruction of justice.
