MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Offense, not defense, has led Virginia to its first national title with 85-77 win over Texas Tech. The Cavaliers counterpunched the Red Raiders' vaunted defense all night before closing them out in overtime.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The only top seed to fall to a No. 16 in the history of the NCAA Tournament is now the only team to come back from such a loss and win a championship the very next season. The Virginia Cavaliers did it the hard way, squandering a 10-point lead against a tenacious Texas Tech team, only to pull away for an 85-77 victory in overtime.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Lost somewhere amid all the agony at Auburn and euphoria at Virginia was the fact that sports are never fair. The tough calls that helped push Virginia into Monday night's national final were the last of several bang-bang decisions referees had to make without the assistance of slow-motion replay or multiple camera angles. It brought fans back to the reality that no matter how hard people try, there is no such thing as perfect when it comes to getting everything right in a sporting event.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Purdue guard Carsen Edwards will give up his final year of eligibility and enter the NBA draft. The 6-foot-1 shooting guard plans to hire an agent. Edwards was the leading scorer for the Boilermakers this season, averaging 24.3 points. He really broke out during the NCAA Tournament, where he averaged 34.8 points in four games and nearly carried Purdue into the Final Four.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Maryland forward Jalen Smith will return for his sophomore year rather than enter his name in the NBA draft. The 6-foot-10 Smith had five double-doubles this season and averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds in Maryland's two games in the NCAA Tournament. He averaged 11.8 points and 6.8 rebounds as a freshman.
UNDATED (AP) — Tom Izzo is expected to have much of his latest Final Four team back next season at Michigan State. The Hall of Fame coach was not in the mood to celebrate that after Texas Tech eliminated the Spartans with a 61-51 victory at the Final Four. Michigan State will have to replace departing seniors Matt McQuaid and Kenny Goins. Every other player on the roster has a chance to return. That could give Izzo another shot at the second national championship he desperately craves.
