MOAB — State Route 128 reopened Sunday evening after a large rock fall forced crews to close the road.

All lanes of the road reopened about 6:28 p.m. Sunday, according to Utah Department of Transportation spokesman Kevin Kitchen.

Five or six rocks the size of motor homes fell onto the road about a mile east of Moab on Sunday morning, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. The road was closed for several hours Sunday as crews worked to clear the slide.

There was no structural damage to the road, Kitchen said. Crews had to break up the rocks and move them off of the roadway.

A second southern Utah rock slide occurred in Zion National Park on Sunday.

The slide has forced a long-term closure of the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway, also known as state Route 9. The road has been closed from Canyon Junction to the east entrance of the park until further notice, according to the National Park Service.
