SYRACUSE, N.C. (AP) — Duke says Zion Williamson won't play tonight when the top-ranked Blue Devils visit Syracuse tonight because of a mild knee sprain. The 280-pound freshman was hurt in the opening minute of Duke's loss to North Carolina on Wednesday night when he planted his foot while dribbling and his shoe tore apart.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — No. 13 LSU says guard Tremont Waters is ill and is not in the lineup for today's game against No. 5 Tennessee. Waters is LSU's leading scorer, averaging 15.7 points per game, and his three steals per game leads the Southeastern Conference. His first absence of the season comes as LSU tries to pull into a tie with Tennessee atop the SEC. LSU is coming off an overtime loss to Florida.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes have activated center Jordan Staal from injured reserve. General manager Don Waddell announced the move before today's game at Dallas. His return is significant for a Carolina team that starts the day one point out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The 30-year-old Staal has missed 32 of 34 games with a concussion.
DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Stars have acquired veteran defenseman Ben Lovejoy in a trade with the New Jersey Devils. The Stars sent defenseman Connor Carrick and a 2019 third-round draft pick to the Devils in the deal, two days before the NHL's trade deadline. Lovejoy is an 11-year veteran and defensive specialist who won a Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016.
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have signed Jose Martinez to a two-year contract, essentially buying out the slugging outfielder's first year of arbitration next season. The Cardinals announced the deal today before their Grapefruit League opener against the Marlins. Martinez is expected to play right field and bat second. Terms of his contract were not disclosed.
