DRAPER — A man who police say held his girlfriend hostage in her car and threatened to kill her as they drove, possibly from Texas, was arrested in Utah thanks a multiagency effort.
Andres Chavez, 46, was arrested for investigation of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault, two counts of carrying a weapon while under the influence of alcohol, and intoxication.
On Wednesday, Draper police responded to a Maverik gas station, 14814 S. Minuteman Drive, on a report of a possible domestic violence incident inside a car, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report. Lehi police had previously put out an attempt-to-locate notification to other agencies for the vehicle, the report states.
In their notification, officers warned "that the suspect was armed and threatened to kill the victim if approached by law enforcement," the report states.
Draper police were able to get Chavez to step out of the vehicle.
"We discovered two handguns on the suspect, one on each hip and multiple open containers in the vehicle," according to the report.
The woman in the car told investigators that she and Chavez live together in Texas and that he "told her that he was going to kill her and her family," but she "just continued driving" in an effort to "keep him away from her family," the report states.
Police noted in the jail report that Chavez has "multiple" warrants out for his arrest in California, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas.
