SALT LAKE CITY — An elderly man is in critical condition after a hit and run crash in Salt Lake City, police said.

The crash took place near 1657 N. Beck Street, according to Salt Lake police Lt. Russ Amott. Officers were dispatched to the scene about 6:21 p.m., according to Salt Lake police dispatchers.

The owner of Cowboy Joe’s, a dog boarding business in the area, was turning a dog over to its owner, Amott said. The dog got away from him and ran out into Beck Street, he said.

The man went after the dog and tried to catch it, but in the process, a Ford F-150 pickup truck coming south on Beck Street hit him, Amott said.

The driver of the truck, described as a white male with brown or blond hair, got out of the truck for a moment to check on the man who was hit, Amott said. Then, the driver fled the scene, he added.

The man who was hit is 74 or 75 years old and had possibly life-threatening injuries, Amott said. He was undergoing surgery on Friday evening, he added. The man was not identified.

The dog also was hit, Amott said, though he did not say how serious the animal’s injuries were.

The truck involved in the crash was tan in color and had an extended cab, Amott said. The man was also accompanied by a 10-year-old boy who was in the front seat of the car, who is possibly named Carter, Amott said.

Anyone with information about the truck or the driver is asked to call Salt Lake police at 801-799-3000.
