UNDATED (AP) — The College Football Playoff selection committee begins its fifth season Tuesday night with the first ranking of the season. If form holds, two schools ranked in the top four this week will go on to play in the semifinals. Of the 16 teams the committee ranked in the top four of its initial rankings from 2014-17, half made the four-team playoff.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California coach Clay Helton has fired offensive line coach Neil Callaway and taken over play-calling duties for the struggling Trojans. Helton took away the play-calling responsibilities from offensive coordinator Tee Martin. Callaway is a longtime friend of Helton and a close associate of Helton's father, former Houston head coach Kim Helton.

SEATTLE (AP) — Chris Petersen tried to make it clear that his decision to bench quarterback Jake Browning during Washington's loss to California was an attempt to spark the sluggish offense and not an indictment of his senior quarterback. Washington's 12-10 loss was among the bigger shocks of the Pac-12 season in part because of the Huskies' inability to do anything on offense. Petersen said Browning would be the starting quarterback when the Huskies host Stanford next Saturday.

GRAPEVINE, Texas (AP) — There are a lot of new voices taking part in selecting the College Football Playoff. Six of the 13 committee members are serving for the first time. It is the biggest turnover since the playoff began in 2014. The first 2018 rankings come out on Tuesday night. It will be the first of six rankings this season to determine who plays in the national semifinal games.
